Who is a Good Candidate for Dentures?
While dental bridges and implants are a great option for patients who are missing one tooth, dentures are ideal for patients who are struggling with more significant tooth loss. So, if you are missing several teeth in a row, you’re missing an entire arch, or you don’t have any of your natural teeth left, then there’s a good chance that you’re a candidate for dentures! To find out for certain, schedule a consultation with our dedicated dentist, Dr. Haidar.
Types of Dentures
At our Worcester dental office, we proudly offer partial, full, and implant dentures. Below, you’ll find a brief overview of each. At your appointment, we will share our recommendations after learning all about your dental history, needs, and goals.
Partial Dentures
Partial dentures are used when a patient has some, but not all of their natural teeth. In this case, prosthetic teeth are mounted on a gum-colored base. Then, the restoration is kept in place with a discreet, gum-colored base. Since only the high-quality materials are used and the entire denture is custom-made, it looks and feels just like the real thing!
Full Dentures
Full dentures, on the other hand, are ideal for patients who are missing an entire arch of teeth. Unlike partials, these restorations are held in place with denture adhesive, natural suction, or a mixture of the two. The size, shape, and shade of each replacement tooth will be crafted with your specific face shape and aesthetic goals in mind as well, so it won’t draw any unwanted attention to your smile either.
Implant Dentures
Implant dentures are also available to our patients in Worcester who are struggling with tooth loss. In this case, the restoration is secured in place with strategically placed dental implants. Although it requires a higher upfront investment, there are several benefits of this option. For example, dental implants can last for 30 years or more with proper care!
The Benefits of Dentures
Dentures have been a tried-and-true tooth-replacement solution for decades. To this day, they are a sought-after solution, especially among patients who are missing a significant number of teeth. If that’s you, then keep reading to learn a few of the many benefits that you’ll enjoy with dentures in Worcester!
They Are Custom-Made for Each Patient

Oftentimes, patients hear “dentures” and think of the bulky, obvious ones that their grandparents or great-grandparents wore. However, this tooth-replacement solution has improved vastly since then, thanks to advancements in both dentistry and technology. Not only that, but we can customize everything from the gum-colored base to the prosthetic teeth to ensure that yours looks and feels lifelike.
It’s Easier to Enunciate Clearly

Have you struggled to enunciate clearly in the weeks, months, or years following tooth loss? If so, you’ll be happy to hear that dentures can help! While partial dentures can fill the gaps in your smile, full dentures can provide you with an entirely new row of teeth. Not only will this give you a confident grin, but it will also restore your usual speaking patterns (after the initial adjustment period, of course).
They Can Last for 10+ Years

It’s true! Plus, proper maintenance doesn’t require expensive cleaning products or complex oral hygiene regimens. Simply use a damp, soft-bristled toothbrush and clear, mild dishwashing liquid to gently scrub the surface after each meal. Then, rinse them off with clean, cool water and place them back in your mouth. Before you go to bed at night, place them in a clean container filled with water as well.
There Are Fewer Dietary Restrictions

Like many other patients, you may be stuck eating applesauce, cottage cheese, and other extremely soft foods on repeat. Fortunately, dentures can restore some of the strength of your bite! While you will still need to steer clear of extremely crunchy and sticky snacks, like hard pretzels and caramel-filled candies, you will be able to eat a much more varied and satisfying diet.
They Help Prevent Dental Drift

Have you heard of dental drift before? If not, it’s the phenomenon when the teeth surrounding the gap begin to shift out of alignment. Initially, this may not seem like a big deal. However, even relatively minor changes to your bite can lead to serious problems, including premature wear and tear on certain teeth. Fortunately, partial dentures can help prevent that from happening by filling in the gaps in your smile.

Dentures Aftercare
You’ll immediately notice just how impactful your dentures are—not just in terms of eating and speaking, but also when it comes to smiling confidently. That said, in order to keep your dentures as beautiful and functional as the first day you received them, it falls on you to practice diligent oral hygiene and make smart lifestyle choices. Luckily, keeping your dentures in great shape is a relatively straightforward matter. Here’s what you need to keep in mind:
Removable Dentures
Remove After Eating
You should remove your dentures after eating anything and rinse them off thoroughly. This isn’t a substitute for properly cleaning them, but it can at least help to prevent food debris from building up on their surface. Be sure to use room temperature water for this, as hot water can warp the dentures and cause them to stop fitting correctly. If you make a habit out of this, it’ll go a long way toward keeping your dentures fresh every day.
Clean Your Restoration
Even though dentures in Worcester replace your natural teeth, they do not replace the need for daily oral hygiene! If you still have some teeth remaining, be sure to brush and floss them daily. As for your dentures, you’ll want to keep them clean by brushing them twice a day using a soft-bristled toothbrush and mild, unscented dish soap. There are also special denture cleansers you can buy to give your restoration a deeper clean. Be sure to never use regular toothpaste on your dentures, since it is abrasive and can scratch their surface.
Keep Your Dentures Safe
Dentures are certainly durable, but like any other dental restoration, they are not invincible and can be broken if you aren't careful. One of the best habits you can practice is putting your dentures in their storage case when you aren’t wearing them, and keep them away from young children or pets. When cleaning your dentures, it’s also wise to place a towel beneath them in order to shield them from fall damage. If you treat your dentures as any other worthy investment you want to protect, they’ll serve you well for several years.
Remove Dentures When You Sleep
Your dentures might be incredibly comfortable to wear, but you shouldn’t wear them to bed. By taking them out each night, you’re giving your facial muscles a well-earned break from supporting your restoration throughout the day. Plus, if you don’t remove your dentures nightly, there’s also a very high chance that bacteria will accumulate underneath them. It’s also possible that you’ll develop painful sores.
Notice Changes
Dentures can last for 7 to 10 years or so with the right care, but it’s mostly up to you to ensure that they continue to fit and function properly. This means that in addition to following the above steps, you should also regularly inspect your dentures for signs of wear or damage, and pay close attention to how they feel inside your mouth. If you’ve had your dentures for a while, or things begin to feel off, it might be time to reach out to our team before your next preventive checkup and cleaning. Luckily, dentures can often be relined to correct their fit; however, if they’ve been damaged or worn for too long, replacement is also a possibility.
Denture FAQs
Can I Use Regular Toothpaste to Clean My Dentures?
Using regular toothpaste is not recommended. Instead, you should clean your dentures after each meal with a damp, soft-bristle toothbrush and mild dishwashing liquid. Then, every night before bed, you should place yours in a clean container filled with milk or a dentist-approved cleaning solution.
Important reminder: You need to take good care of any natural teeth that you have as well! That starts with brushing twice a day and extends to rinsing with mouthwash for 30-60 seconds each morning or evening.
What Can’t You Eat with Dentures?
Fortunately, there are far more foods that you can eat with dentures. However, like your natural teeth, they can break with enough force. So, it’s best to avoid crunchy foods, like raw almonds, hard pretzels, and peanut brittle. You should also steer clear of taffy, peanut butter-filled candies, and other sticky sweets that can pull your restoration out of place.
What Should You Do if Your Dentures Break?
Let’s start with what you should NOT do: do not use superglue or a DIY denture repair kit. Instead, contact our team at Worcester Dental Arts. From there, we can schedule an appointment and walk you through what to do in the meantime, starting with keeping your restoration in a small, clean container for safekeeping. Once you arrive at our office, we can determine if we can repair it or if we need to begin the process of having a new one made.
Should I Have All My Teeth Pulled to Get Dentures?
That depends! Are the remaining teeth that you have healthy or can be restored with a filling, crown, or root canal? If so, then we don’t recommend having them pulled just to make room in your mouth for dentures. Instead, we will have a partial denture made to fill the gaps in your smile while preserving your natural teeth.
Can I Sleep with My Dentures?
Sleeping with your dentures is not recommended for a few reasons, starting with the fact that your gums need time to rest. So, it’s important to get in the habit of taking them out before you turn in for the evening. If you place them in a glass filled with water or a dentist-approved cleanser, then they will be fresh and clean come morning!
Am I Too Young to Get Dentures?
All too often, patients assume that dentures are only for seniors. In reality, they can help patients of all ages who are struggling with tooth loss, including those in their 20s, 30s, and 40s. So, don’t hesitate to schedule a consultation with one of our dedicated dentists to discuss dentures in Worcester! They’d be happy to learn about your unique dental history, needs, and goals to determine if this is the ideal tooth-replacement solution for you.
