Can Certain Types of Toothpaste Harm My Veneers?

Veneers are one of the most popular and sought-after cosmetic dental solutions out there. They’re capable of addressing a wide range of aesthetic issues, including chipped and cracked teeth, stained teeth, misshapen teeth, and more. Plus, with the right care, they can last for several years. However, one aspect of this care includes brushing them with the right type of toothpaste. Here’s why this matters and how to ensure you aren’t accidentally harming your veneers while carrying out your daily hygiene routine.

How Toothpaste Can Harm Veneers

Although your veneers look just like your teeth, their composition is actually quite different. Their surfaces are non-porous, making them more resistant to staining than your enamel. However, they still need to be brushed and properly cared for to retain a gorgeous appearance.

You can’t just use any regular toothpaste to brush your veneers, though. Many toothpastes include abrasive agents, such as baking soda, to help remove plaque and polish the teeth. This can unfortunately cause harm to the surfaces of your veneers, marring their appearance. Likewise, some toothpastes are marketed as whitening products and contain bleaching agents, like hydrogen peroxide, which can damage the structure of the veneers.

If you have veneers, always look for gentle toothpastes and avoid ones that are overly abrasive or formulated for whitening. While there are toothpastes specifically designed for dental restorations, as long as you’re using something non-abrasive and non-whitening, you should be all set.

Your Toothbrush Also Matters

While using the right type of toothpaste is crucial, it’s equally important that you’re using a soft-bristled toothbrush that won’t harm the surfaces of your veneers. Toothbrushes with hard bristles can be too abrasive for your veneers, even when paired with a non-abrasive toothpaste. Also, be sure that you’re using light pressure when cleaning your teeth; being heavy-handed can also lead to damaged veneers. When brushing, take your time and use small, circular motions along each surface of every tooth.

Your veneers are an investment in your smile and your confidence, so you should want them to look their best for the foreseeable future. Although it might not seem like a huge deal, the impact that toothpaste can have on veneers shouldn’t be ignored!
